Let’s Dance in a new light
(RTL’s “Let’s Dance” is the German equivalent of the BBC’s original “Strictly come Dancing”.
As in previous years BET got involved with supervising the HDR production side of the new series again.
The challenge this time was to produce an HDR version of the programme which reaps the benefit of the advanced possibilities of current video-on-demand devices and to achieve a future-proof version for archiving.
Together with RTL, CBC (Cologne Broadcasting Center), MMC (MMC Studios Köln) and Crosscast we developed a workflow to capture the maximum performance range of the cameras with a peak luminance of more than 2000 nits using the PQ transfer function. Even the Starlight Filter, which is a signature effect of the show, could be adapted for HDR. 15 individual mappers were used to generate monitoring with minimal latency while simultaneously producing a UHD/HLG and a HD/SDR feed for live distribution.
A close collaboration and fine-tuning between lighting, the setup/shading of the cameras and specific converter settings for mapping of the signals is needed to achieve impressive pictures on all channels. For such a purpose BET can provide an array of basic settings for all relevant devices to quickly establish an individual HDR workflow.
